Interior of a modern home office.

Everyone knows that DIY home improvement projects save you money. Whether you improve your home for better living, or improve its market value, the greatest reward is not money. The satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself.

But let’s look at it. Homeowners like you and I are big fans of home improvement projects. We value our skill level and are frustrated when we can’t complete your home improvement project on time and within budget. Too often, projects are abandoned halfway through.

You don’t have to let this happen to you. After several failures, I took advice from friends and experts and compiled them into a series of quick home improvement tips. They helped improve my last DIY home and I hope they help you too.

  1. Plan, plan and plan some more

You will not be disappointed with the planning and preparation. Do the work in your head, put it on paper, then think again when you do the actual work. Get more equipment than you need. Garbage and waste happens in DIY home construction. You’ll be happy when you don’t have to run to the hardware store to get another stick, or a different color bottle.

  1. Divide and Conquer

Break down the entire home improvement project into small DIY jobs. Don’t think about painting the entire house inside and out, top and bottom in one weekend. Consider painting your child’s bedroom or kitchen. It will be easier to manage one small task at a time. And if the whole project happens to drag on for a while, at least things won’t get too messy.

  1. Better than sorry

When professionals have to wear hard hats and glasses, what makes you think you’re better off and don’t need any equipment? Earplugs, face masks, safety boots are all essential safety equipment depending on the type of home improvement job. Don’t have one of them? Which would you prefer: spending money on equipment now, or paying medical bills later? Your choice.

  1. Calculate the value

Saving money by cutting back on good tools and equipment is a bad idea. Make sure that your home improvement costs will be reduced. But if it takes 10 years, you may have to redo the project in another 5. The right equipment can do the job in a month but now it takes 3 months or more. You may save money in the short term, but it may cost you more in the long run. Be thoughtful. Don’t pay unattainable prices.

  1. Get the Job Done

Don’t let your DIY home improvement project hang around. Finish it. Maybe you’re running out of time to complete a project this weekend. So put those tools away, and remember to bring them out again at the end of the week. Don’t start another home improvement project until you’ve finished the current one. If you don’t follow this rule, nothing will get done. Really.
